Papertech’s TotalVision Expands Into the Steel Industry

Long recognized for innovation in machine vision solutions for the paper, pulp, tissue, non-woven, and battery industries, Papertech is excited to announce the expansion of its TotalVision technology into the steel industry.
Papertech’s WebInspector® and WebVision® systems had successfully applied to metallurgical processing lines, hot rolling, and sheet finishing operations. Built to withstand harsh industrial environments, TotalVision systems use high-speed digital cameras housed in rugged enclosures, ensuring reliable performance even under extreme conditions.
The advanced software detects and maps surface defects in real-time, helping operators minimize downtime, reduce waste, and enhance product quality — delivering the same high-value results Papertech is known for across all industries.
Key TotalVision Features:
• High-resolution imaging with synchronized LED lighting and automated lens cleaning
• User-friendly inspection software for fast and accurate defect mapping
• Simple maintenance with off-the-shelf, non-proprietary components
• Powerful performance tools including instant video playback and 24-hour event history
Papertech is proud to partner with Star Tool & Die Works Inc. and will showcase its steel-ready TotalVision solutions at AISTech 2025, held May 5–8 at the Music City Center in Nashville, TN. Visit Booth #2607, where Richard Eagle, Hardware Developer – Engineering at Papertech, will be on-site for live system demos.

Groupe Sustana Enhances Production with New Papertech System

Groupe Sustana, formerly Rolland Paper, is further advancing the efficiency and quality of its operations at its St-Jérôme, Québec facility with the integration of Papertech Inc.’s state-of-the-art machine vision solutions. Known for producing specialty papers, the facility is adding a new WIS system to PM8, following the successful installation of Papertech’s WMS system on both PM8 in 2020 and PM7 in 2021. These systems were installed by the Papertech team before their transition to sales.

The new WIS system will bring enhanced capabilities to the production line. It includes a new beam housing (3) 8K line scan cameras, paired with two light sources—one for transmission and one for reflection—to detect a broad range of paper defects. This new addition will enhance defect detection accuracy, significantly boosting overall performance.

In addition, Groupe Sustana will implement Papertech’s iSTOP+™ system, eliminating the need for their current ink marking process. This upgrade will provide a more efficient solution with a single camera and LED setup on both the paper machine and winder, streamlining operations and reducing potential disruptions.

The pre-engineering visit for the new system is scheduled for the first week of February 2025. The system is expected to be delivered by mid summer, with installation and commissioning slated for completion before the end of 2025. This latest installation at Groupe Sustana further solidifies Papertech’s role as a trusted partner in the paper manufacturing industry.

 iSTOP+™ – new non-marking winder automation solution

iSTOP+™ represents the industry’s first non-marking solution for accurately measuring the machine direction (MD) sheet position at the winder. There is no need for ink, lasers, or any type of marking when using our iSTOP+™ camera image pattern matching solution (patent pending). The maintenance and safety issues associated with ink and laser type marking are eliminated from winder control, with the added benefit of increased system reliability.
